4 new college members be part of the College of Structure and Planning (SA+P) this fall, providing the MIT group creativity, information, and scholarship in multidisciplinary roles.

Karrie G. Karahalios ’94, MEng ’95, SM ’97, PhD ’04 joins the MIT Media Lab as a full professor of media arts and sciences. Karahalios is a pioneer within the exploration of social media and of how individuals talk in environments which might be more and more mediated by algorithms that, as she has written, “form the world round us.” Her work combines computing, methods, synthetic intelligence, anthropology, sociology, psychology, recreation principle, design, and infrastructure research. His analysis focuses on how personalised AI methods can amplify human cognition, from studying and decision-making to self-development, reflection, and well-being. Pataranutaporn will co-direct the Advancing People with AI Program.
Mariana Popescu joins the Division of Structure as an assistant professor. Popescu is a computational architect and structural designer with a powerful curiosity and expertise in progressive methods of approaching the fabrication course of and use of supplies in development. Her space of experience is computational and parametric design, with a deal with digital fabrication and sustainable design.
