The opposite backpacks | Seth’s Weblog

A strong metaphor from a protracted hike:

Each hiker is intimately conscious of their backpack. They picked it out, selecting from dozens of choices. They know which straps are free and that are digging into their pores and skin. They will inform you if itโ€™s lopsided, and what’s in every pocket.

And butโ€ฆ

Even after days on the path, they in all probability couldnโ€™t inform you a factor about anybody elseโ€™s backpack. Besides, maybe, that everybody else has one.

Thatโ€™s step one towards empathy: Realizing that everybody else has a backpack, and that itโ€™s completely different from yours.
