A strong metaphor from a protracted hike:
Each hiker is intimately conscious of their backpack. They picked it out, selecting from dozens of choices. They know which straps are free and that are digging into their pores and skin. They will inform you if itโs lopsided, and what’s in every pocket.
And butโฆ
Even after days on the path, they in all probability couldnโt inform you a factor about anybody elseโs backpack. Besides, maybe, that everybody else has one.
Thatโs step one towards empathy: Realizing that everybody else has a backpack, and that itโs completely different from yours.
