A strong metaphor from a protracted hike:
Each hiker is intimately conscious of their backpack. They picked it out, selecting from dozens of choices. They know which straps are free and that are digging into their pores and skin. They will inform you if it’s lopsided, and what’s in every pocket.
And but…
Even after days on the path, they in all probability couldn’t inform you a factor about anybody else’s backpack. Besides, maybe, that everybody else has one.
That’s step one towards empathy: Realizing that everybody else has a backpack, and that it’s completely different from yours.
